Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained online.
